Title:Fall in number of visitors to summer festival

A variety of different factors may have led to a slight dip in the number of visitors to the Nilgiris during the summer festival.

Speaking to The Hindu, officials from the tourism department and the horticulture department said that the Karnataka elections, the start of the holy month of Ramadan and other factors led to a slight dip in tourist numbers this year, when compared with previous years.

"However, we can still be proud of the tremendous, resounding success of the summer festival this year, as the various shows and events were organised without causing any major impact to the lives of locals, and also having a minimal impact to the environment,"  an official said.

"When compared with 2017, visitors to the Fruit Show were down by 9,000 visitors over the course of the two-day event, while there was a 10 % decrease in the number of visitors to the vegetable show in Kotagiri,"  said Sivasubramaniam Samraj, Joint Director of horticulture (in-charge), Nilgiris district.

Officials said that a total of 1.5 lakh visitors visited the 122nd Flower Show, which was held over five days this year, as opposed to 1.1 lakh visitors last year, when the event was held over three days. Mr. Samraj said that the preparatory efforts taken by the district administration and the municipalities ensured that there was almost no plastic waste nor garbage which was generated and disposed off improperly.

"In Coonoor, there were around 20-30 volunteers who helped with picking up garbage generated at the fruit show, while our staff and the municipality workers too helped with ensuring a green summer festival,"  he added. The Nilgiris district police too were lauded for their efforts at traffic control this year, with former Superintendent of Police Murali Rambha being credited by activists and NGOs for ensuring smooth traffic flows within the district and preventing accidents on Kalhatti Ghat Road.
