Title:‘When will buses, bus stops become disabled-friendly?’

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the city government and the Delhi Transport Corporation to submit a timeline by which they would ensure that the fleet of buses and bus stops in the Capital are disabled-friendly by June 1.

The court asked the government to submit details on necessary repairs and renovation of roads in rural Delhi to ensure plying of disabled-friendly low-floor buses (LFBs).

The court said once the affidavits, as directed by it, are filed, it might consider allowing the Delhi government to go ahead with its tender process to procure 2,000 standard-floor buses (SFBs). The government said that SFBs would ply in rural areas as roads there are not good to allow operation of LFBs.

The court was hearing two pleas moved by Nipun Malhotra, who suffers from locomotor disability, challenging the SFBs tenders. Advocate Jai Dehadrai, appearing for him, told the court that disabled people also live in rural areas and permitting procurement of SFBs would exclude them from access to public transport.
