Britain's most senior official in charge of negotiating the country's exit from the European Union has resigned, just two days after Prime Minister Theresa May announced she had finally united her Government behind a plan for Brexit.

Brexit Secretary David Davis had recently clashed with Ms May over plans for exiting the European Union.

Reports said Mr Davis resigned on Sunday, 48 hours after Ms May announced her divided Government had at last agreed on a plan for ties with the EU after the UK leaves next year.

Ms May is due to brief politicians today on the plan devised by the Cabinet during its 12-hour meeting.

It seeks to keep the UK and the EU in a free-trade zone for goods, and commits Britain to maintaining the same rules as the bloc for goods and agricultural products.
