Title:Site chosen for Antarctic year-round runway near Australia's Davis research station

A site close to Australia's southern most Antarctic research station has been chosen for a new paved runway to provide year-round access.

An area near Davis Research Station was selected after two years of investigations funded by $10 million from the Federal Government.

The paved runway will make access to the frozen continent easier for researchers who are currently limited by a summer-only ice runway at Wilkins Aerodrome near Casey station.

As well as improved access for researchers at Davis, the sealed runway will improve emergency responses.

A joint statement from Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said: "Access to Antarctica in winter is difficult and rare, with temperatures dropping to minus 40°C at Davis station."

The statement said the project would be subjected to extensive environmental approvals.
